How does the simulation work?

For every age from now to 90, it computes two numbers: the corpus you would need to retire at that age (your inflation-adjusted expenses for all remaining years), and the corpus you are projected to actually have, growing with returns and your rising investments. Your power age is where the projection permanently overtakes the requirement.

What inputs does it need?

Your current age, annual expenses, existing investment corpus, expected returns before and after retirement, and the annual rate at which you grow your investments (typically in line with income growth).

Life expectancy of 90 years and 5% annual inflation. Fixed assumptions keep results comparable between runs; both are deliberately conservative for planning purposes.

Why are pre- and post-retirement returns separate?

Before retirement you can hold growth assets and tolerate volatility; after retirement the corpus typically shifts toward safer, lower-return instruments because it is being drawn down. The defaults - 12% before, 8% after - reflect that shift.

How early can someone realistically retire?

As a reference: a 25-year-old spending ₹5 lakh a year with a ₹20 lakh corpus, earning 12% pre-retirement returns and growing investments 5% annually, reaches their power age at 41. Higher savings growth or lower expenses pull that age in sharply.
